George said later "this award means more than anything that has ever happened to me. Being voted Songwriter of the Year by people in the same business as me is completely overwhelming". Earlier Elton hugged 21-year-old George at the ceremony at London's Grosvenor House Hotel and said "It's very rare that one meets a major songwriter in the tradition of Barry Gibb and Paul McCartney". George Michael was watched by his Wham! partner Andrew Ridgeley, as he picked up the British music industries top award, the Ivor Novella Songwriter of the Year. And his song Careless Whisper, was named the most performed work. |
